Been giving this a go, and I think it's very good! The dodge-roll ability is an interesting addition that has its own unique benefits and drawbacks, and it's also interesting how some stages are different each time. I had some memories of Jr. Pac-Man in arcades, and this feels the closest to that experience with a few small differences. The lack of a freeze on each eaten ghost takes a bit of getting used to, but it doesn't really ruin the experience (plus I assume this choice was made to not hamper a second player's experience in simultaneous co-op).
My biggest issue involves controls. I have had no luck controlling the game with a keyboard after it starts, regardless of which brother I choose. I've had some luck with a controller, which seems to default to Louie, but it seems the dodge button is the same button that adds credits, so if there's a unique sound to dodging I've yet to hear it. Basically, it would be nice to have some ability to customize controls, if just to test that inputs are being accepted. It's hard to tell as-is what the game thinks is being designated as player controllers or respective inputs, so being able to resolve those mysteries would be very much welcomed.
Apart from that, I'm not really sure that there's much else to address! Of course, I'm still trying to get the hang of things so chances are I haven't seen everything the game has to offer, but from what I've seen this is a very solid experience overall!
Honestly so GrEaT & fluid, it could be the next commercial game beyond Jr-Pacman! ʕ✧ᴥ✧ʔ [2P sure is fun!]
Dodge-roll mechanics is genius! (and balanced)... can act as a speed boost, a frenzy/gobbling dash on frightened-ghost, an active way to phase through one or two close ghosts in a corridor... (but near turns or with many ghost surrounding you, it requires some finesse! <3 but it skips pellets to have a downside! ...try to do an epic rebound-roll if a ghost is tailing you close, or a "phasing-chomp" if a frightened-ghost is hiding near a normal one... for a confidence boost! ʕ→ᴥ←ʔ)
Lotery system (write PACMAN when eating ghosts) is quite the find and a nice refreshing twist. It breaks the normal timing of a routine with power-pellets in order to acquire precious lives long term. The 2 fruits random pathing per maze with "slow pellets" opens a lot of strategies. ʕ•ᴥᵕʔ
Nice simple options with "turbo/boost", a 5th ghost, no flashing when powered (thanks the dev for that), side graphics on/off (less distracting), sounds/music balancing, fullscreen, and the choice for the starting level among others.
-------------
The only thing it could use/add is accessibility for casual gaming IMO:
-An easy-mode (with 25/50% speed decrease for all levels, feeling slow but not sluggish) + no dodge-roll bounce on walls to make it easier to master later (and maybe +30% fright-time each levels, blocked at 1sec [not 0] in the harder levels & x2/x3 longer time in the center-box for the ghostz, to breath better).... for only 50% scoring (or another score-board entirely if problematic to compare ʕᵔᴥᵔʔ)
-An option maybe to "pac-boost" only when pushing a button (i recommend z, and if maintained Doge-Roll trigger but the top/some speed is conserved unless z is released later; should be good/simple and interesting?! to learn and master, use at a minimum etc...) to speed up as needed and be dynamic (in that "fancy-turbo" mode, like many versions of pac-man have, "Tengen" for example)
(Side-graphics and fruits in the maze could need a modern/crisp relooking [not nice/polished 2D-3D like the rest], but with the AI trend it should be easy to do! A fan could do it too <3)
But F#@$ing good job on this game, i'm baffled! ʕ♡ᴥ♡ʔ Free indeed, it's no short of amazing! (could get a price tag on Steam at around 1-5$ and show it to some Indie/retro Youtubers for a Pac-plosion maybe... because i only got to know about it by searching every pac-games in itch.io...)
game is amazing, the only thing I don't like is how the time to eat the ghost gets shorter up until it is non-existent. I wish it stayed at 10 seconds because they basically become useless at 5-x
I played this about a day ago. And this was fantastic. I love the new dodge roll mechanic. And the fact that this is co-op is fantastic. I hope you keep updating this. Maybe add a level maker. Because after Pac man community went down. There is no official Pac man level maker I really enjoy. Just saying. It can be neat though.
Hello fellow PacMan Community player. Ive been looking everywhere to find something similar to PMC. A four player online version is so hard to find. It was such a great game.
I loved the game, good mechanics, good sprites, and all good... but just 2 small questions or suggestions, can't you add a control editor? and the other, can't you add that the second player can play on the same keyboard? Because I want to play it with a friend, but I don't have a controller or controller..
This game is phenomenal and I don't mean that lightly! Pac-Man (at least classic 2D maze Pac) Is a formula many don't dare to mess with as many fangames in the past just add lame gimmicks or increase his speed for sake of adding something new.
To me Pac-Man is all about being aware of your surroundings and outsmarting the AI whilst enjoying the stage design that was added in later games.
Pac-Man Brothers feels like a natural evolution of Ms Pac-Man and Pac-Man JR rather than and evolution of Arrangement (and that's a good thing) Rather than add new powerups what we get is solid controls and the newly added roll move which is very balanced.
The roll lets you be invincible and avoid the monsters BUT you also pass though pacdots you need to eat, to top it off you cant use it around corners and if you bump into a wall you bounce back leaving you open for attack but in the hands of a pro it has many great uses, best part is the game is balanced enough where you dont even have to use it!
The new PACMAN system at the bottom was a little confusing but adds a new element to gaining lives. Every 10 seconds a letter is highlighted and when you eat a powerpellet there is a chance one of the monsters will have a letter on them. Eat all the PACMAN letters and youll get an extra life (but its pretty hard)
Stage design is procedurally generated (after the first stage) so its almost like a roguelike where there will always be something new when you come back!
The Pac-Man OCs are honestly pretty cool and the game feels official. I pray Namco notices this and makes it official just like the Pac-Man CE NES demake that was made back in 2020. Amazing game, go play it!
